Find the Right Light Fixture Size and Lumens for Your Room

Choose a room type, fixture shape, room size, and ceiling height. This calculator estimates the fixture diameter, fixture height, hanging clearance, and total lumens that fit your space.

Room & Fixture Details

Enter your room measurements and select the lighting style you are considering.

This calculator is a planning guide. Always check the fixture's actual dimensions, weight, mounting requirements, and local electrical code before installation.

How the Calculator Works

1. Fixture Size

The base rule is room length plus room width in feet, converted to inches. A 12 ft by 14 ft room usually fits a fixture around 26 inches wide.

2. Room Adjustment

Living rooms can go slightly larger, bedrooms are usually more comfortable with a softer size, and dining rooms depend on the table width.

3. Lumens

Total lumens are estimated from room area and room function. Bedrooms need softer light; kitchens, bathrooms, and offices usually need more brightness.

Quick Reference: Lumens by Room

Room Suggested Lumens per Square Foot Best Use
Bedroom 10–15 lm/ft² Soft general light, relaxing atmosphere, bedside layers.
Living Room 15–25 lm/ft² Balanced everyday brightness with optional accent lighting.
Dining Room 15–25 lm/ft² Warm light over the table, preferably dimmable.
Kitchen 30–45 lm/ft² Brighter task lighting for prep, counters, and islands.
Bathroom 25–40 lm/ft² Clear mirror and task lighting with comfortable ambient light.
Home Office 30–50 lm/ft² Task-friendly brightness for reading and screen work.

Tip: If the room has recessed lights, wall sconces, table lamps, or floor lamps, the main fixture does not need to provide all the lumens by itself.

Fixture Shape Rules

Fixture Shape Size Logic Best For
Round Chandelier / Ceiling Light Use the calculated diameter range directly. Living rooms, bedrooms, foyers, square rooms.
Linear Chandelier / Island Light Recommended length is usually 1/2 to 2/3 of the table, island, or room zone length. Dining tables, kitchen islands, long rectangular rooms.
Flush Mount Use the lower-to-middle end of the size range. Low ceilings, bedrooms, hallways, compact rooms.
Semi-Flush Mount Use a balanced diameter and keep enough walking clearance below. 8–10 ft ceilings, bedrooms, living rooms, entries.
Pendant Light For single pendants, use a smaller range; for multiple pendants, size each light by spacing and surface width. Kitchen islands, bedside lighting, breakfast nooks.

Lighting Calculator FAQ

These answers explain how room size, ceiling height, fixture shape, lumens, and color temperature work together when choosing indoor lighting.

How do I calculate the right size light fixture for a room?

A common rule is to add the room length and width in feet, then use that number as the fixture diameter in inches. For example, a 12 ft by 14 ft room usually works well with a fixture around 26 inches wide. For metric measurements, add the room length and width in meters, then multiply by about 8 to 10 to estimate the fixture diameter in centimeters.

How many lumens do I need for a living room?

Most living rooms need about 15 to 25 lumens per square foot. A 200-square-foot living room usually needs around 3,000 to 5,000 total lumens. If you also use floor lamps, wall sconces, recessed lights, or table lamps, your main ceiling fixture does not need to provide all the brightness by itself.

How many lumens do I need for a bedroom?

Bedrooms usually need softer light than living rooms. A good range is about 10 to 15 lumens per square foot. For example, a 150-square-foot bedroom may need around 1,500 to 2,250 total lumens. Dimmable lighting is especially helpful because bedrooms need both general light and relaxing evening light.

Should a living room light be larger than a bedroom light?

In many cases, yes. Living rooms can usually handle a slightly larger fixture because they are social spaces and often need stronger visual impact. Bedrooms usually feel better with a more restrained fixture size, especially if the light hangs above the bed or the ceiling is low.

How does ceiling height affect light fixture size?

Ceiling height affects both fixture height and hanging clearance. A common guide is to allow about 2.5 to 3 inches of fixture height for each foot of ceiling height. For rooms with lower ceilings, flush mount and semi-flush mount lights are usually safer and more comfortable than long hanging chandeliers.

How low should a chandelier hang in a living room?

In open walking areas, the bottom of a chandelier should usually be at least 7 feet above the floor. If the chandelier hangs over a dining table or kitchen island, the bottom of the fixture is commonly placed about 30 to 36 inches above the surface.

How do I choose the size of a linear chandelier?

For a linear chandelier over a dining table or kitchen island, the fixture length is often about one-half to two-thirds of the table or island length. In a long rectangular room, a linear fixture can also help spread light more evenly than a small round fixture.

Are lumens more important than watts?

Yes. Lumens measure how much light a fixture produces, while watts measure how much energy it uses. With LED lighting, wattage can vary a lot between products, so lumens are the better number to compare when choosing brightness.

What color temperature should I choose for indoor lighting?

Warm white light around 2700K to 3000K is usually best for bedrooms, dining rooms, and cozy living spaces. A slightly brighter 3000K to 4000K range can work well for kitchens, bathrooms, and home offices where clearer task lighting is useful.

Can one ceiling light provide enough light for the whole room?

Sometimes, but layered lighting usually works better. A ceiling light can provide general brightness, while table lamps, floor lamps, wall sconces, under-cabinet lights, or recessed lights can add task lighting and softer atmosphere. This is especially important in larger living rooms, kitchens, and multi-use spaces.
