The case is for reference only.

Space Reference

Outdoor Lighting Case

A layered outdoor lighting scheme for a private modern courtyard built around board-formed concrete walls, low lounge seating, desert planting, architectural steps, and a quiet entry path. The lighting plan uses round outdoor wall sconces, planter uplights, step lights, bollard fixtures, linear base lighting, and a portable-style floor lamp to make the courtyard feel private, safe, and usable after dusk.

The Lighting Intent

This residence used high concrete walls and dark timber cladding to create a private outdoor room between the main living volume and the entry approach. The homeowners wanted the courtyard to work as a quiet evening lounge, not just a pass-through space. During the day, the architecture felt strong and sculptural; after sunset, the risk was that the same concrete walls could become heavy, flat, and intimidating.

Warm & Inviting

Challenge: The enclosed concrete courtyard needed safe night use without turning the private lounge into a brightly lit exterior room.

Visual Comfort

Direction: Wall sconces, planter uplights, step lights, bollards, and linear base lighting were layered to define walls, plants, seating, and movement.

Focal Details

Result: The courtyard feels warmer, safer, and more architectural after dusk, while still preserving the quiet privacy of the residence.

Space impressions

Impressions From the Space

Quick perspectives from visitors and team members who experienced the lighting in this space.

Victor Hayes

Modern Homeowner

The courtyard feels warmer without losing its minimalist character. The wall sconces make the concrete feel softer at night.

Amelia Stone

Landscape Designer

The planter uplights are the strongest part of the scheme. They bring the agave and olive tree shadows onto the walls beautifully.

Ryan Cooper

Architect

The lighting stays disciplined. It does not fight the concrete, timber, or furniture, which is why the space feels resolved.

Morgan Blake

Electrical Contractor

The step lights and linear base lighting were clean, but they needed exact coordination before the hardscape was finished.

Where This Approach Fits

Modern Courtyard Homes

A strong fit for enclosed residential courtyards where lighting must soften hard walls and support evening use.

Concrete Exterior Architecture

Works well for board-formed concrete, stone, stucco, and other textured wall surfaces that benefit from warm grazing light.

Private Outdoor Lounges

Useful for seating areas that need enough light for conversation without feeling exposed or overdesigned.

Entry Garden Paths

A practical direction for homes where guests move through planted courtyards, steps, or narrow approach paths after dark.
