Project Overview

Dazuma brought a coordinated whole-home lighting solution to the project, connecting arrival, living, kitchen, bedroom, and outdoor spaces through a warm, layered, and visually consistent residential lighting system.

The Calder Residence was developed as a fully integrated residential lighting project rather than a collection of isolated room-by-room fixture selections. The home combines a formal front arrival, a double-height entry volume, warm family living spaces, a highly functional kitchen, a private bedroom retreat, and an outdoor entertaining zone that remains visually connected to the interior after dark. The lighting strategy was built to support daily usability, architectural emphasis, and emotional warmth at every scale. Instead of relying on brightness, the scheme uses layers of ambient, decorative, and accent lighting to create comfort, orientation, and a stronger sense of residential luxury. Dazuma’s role can be positioned as helping organize these layers into one coherent and buildable lighting system.

A whole-home lighting concept that treats entry, architecture, living zones, private rooms, and exterior spaces as one unified residential system
A strong balance between functional clarity and calm luxury, especially across the kitchen, stair hall, and bedroom suite
Dazuma-supported coordination of façade lighting, decorative feature fixtures, architectural wall lighting, step guidance, and outdoor lounge ambiance

From Brief to Final Installation

Project Brief

Brief

Understanding the scope, priorities, and visual direction

We begin by reviewing the project goals, site conditions, space functions, and overall design expectations. This early stage helps define the lighting direction and identify the key performance needs for the project.

Drawing & Site Review

Concept

Translating concept requirements into buildable conditions

Drawings, dimensions, ceiling conditions, and installation constraints are reviewed to align the lighting plan with the actual site. This step helps reduce coordination issues before fixtures move into final selection and placement.

Fixture Coordination

Technical

Matching fixture types, finishes, and placement to the project

Fixture specifications are coordinated according to the design intent, application requirements, and site conditions. Size, finish, light output, and mounting details are considered together to support both visual impact and practical use.

Installation

Supporting clean execution during the installation phase

During installation, fixture positioning, on-site conditions, and execution details are reviewed to keep the lighting plan aligned with the intended result. This stage is critical for maintaining consistency across the project.

Front Entry & Arrival

A restrained but high-end approach sequence that establishes the home’s nighttime identity from the first step

The front entry is designed to feel calm, private, and clearly defined without excessive brightness. Low-level path lights guide movement toward the door, while wall sconces and recessed soffit lighting frame the threshold and highlight the contrast between stone, wood, and smooth wall surfaces. This is especially important in the U.S. luxury residential market, where exterior lighting is expected to support security and elegance at the same time.

· Strengthen the first impression
· Support safe movement to the entry
· Maintain residential privacy and softness

Double-Height Foyer & Stair Hall

A sculptural entry volume where decorative and architectural lighting work together to create vertical drama without glare

The foyer is one of the defining spaces of the house. The double-height stair hall uses statement chandeliers, wall lighting, and carefully balanced ambient light to emphasize vertical scale and material texture, especially across the stone wall and open stair. Instead of treating this as a purely decorative volume, the lighting also supports circulation and nighttime orientation, making the entry both impressive and livable.

· Create a strong architectural focal point
· Support safe circulation on stairs and landings
· Balance drama with warm residential comfort

Great Room & Family Living

A warm social core designed for evening relaxation, entertaining, and visual continuity with the terrace beyond

The great room relies on ambient ceiling lighting, soft decorative elements, and reflected warm surfaces rather than strong direct contrast. Large sliding glazing keeps the room connected to the outside, so the lighting needed to feel balanced from both interior and exterior viewpoints. The result is a room that supports casual family use while still reading as premium and visually composed.

· Create a relaxed but polished main living atmosphere
· Maintain visual connection to the exterior
· Support comfort across conversation, television, and evening use

Kitchen & Island

A task-driven space where functional clarity is layered into a calm, luxury residential composition

The kitchen required a brighter functional layer than the rest of the home, but it still needed to feel integrated into the overall architectural mood. The island chandelier gives the room identity, while recessed downlights and under-cabinet lighting support food preparation, cleanup, and countertop use. This balance is important because a luxury kitchen must perform like a working space without visually feeling like one.

· Support prep, cooking, and counter use
· Keep task lighting clean and integrated
· Use decorative lighting to anchor the island visually

Primary Bedroom Suite

A private retreat designed around softness, visual calm, and warm bedside layering

The primary bedroom shifts the lighting language toward rest and emotional comfort. Wall-mounted lights, bedside lamps, and a softer decorative overhead fixture create layered illumination without sharp contrast. The large glazing and view beyond the room help the suite feel expansive, while the lighting remains restrained enough to preserve a quiet nighttime atmosphere. This kind of balance is essential in higher-end U.S. residential work, where bedrooms are expected to feel both styled and genuinely restful.

· Support wind-down routines and bedside comfort
· Preserve softness and privacy
· Use layered lighting rather than one dominant source

Covered Outdoor Living & Entertainment Zone

An outdoor room designed to feel like a true extension of the house rather than a separate exterior zone

The covered patio combines outdoor seating, an integrated cooking area, and a fireplace feature in one cohesive evening environment. Recessed soffit lights support general visibility, while step lights, lantern-style accents, and fireplace glow soften the atmosphere and encourage longer use after sunset. This space is important because it shows how the residence performs as a lifestyle environment, not just as an indoor architectural shell.

· Extend the home’s livable hours outdoors
· Support gathering, dining, and conversation
· Maintain warmth and visibility without over-lighting the patio
